Amazing worlds, fascinating characters, and surprising adventures — all in the form of beautiful illustrations. Perfect for learning Polish.
Comics are an ideal choice for those who are hesitant to tackle books in Polish (although we recommend them to everyone). Graphic novels have a long tradition in Poland, so there is definitely a lot to choose from. It’s worth starting with the most well-known titles.
“Kajko and Kokosz”
This is a comic book series by Janusz Christa, which ran continuously for 20 years. The Slavic warriors and their adventures first reached readers in 1972. In recent years, new installments of the series have been created, not by Janusz Christa (who passed away), but by new authors.
The comic follows the adventures of the two main heroes living in the town of Mirmiłowo. The warriors bravely face the Bandits led by Hegemon, experiencing many extraordinary and humorous adventures along the way.
“Tytus, Romek, and A’Tomek”
This is definitely a cornerstone of Polish comics. The title characters are two scouts and… a monkey named Tytus. The trio constantly stumbles upon interesting clues and embarks on incredible adventures. It’s worth noting that Papcio Chmiel’s works are full of humor, references to various cultural texts, and irony. Contrary to appearances, this series is not only for young readers. It has stood the test of time, and individual stories are still read with a wide smile on one’s face.
“Kajtek and Koko”
Returning to the works of Janusz Christa. Kajtek and Koko, especially their adventures in space, are a pillar of Polish comics. Once again, the main characters, much like Laurel and Hardy, experience countless adventures. They discover unknown planets and strange creatures, travel to the Middle Ages where science fiction elements appear, and uncover the secrets of the past. Expect humor, intriguing plots, and amazing adventures.
“The Witcher”
The character created by Andrzej Sapkowski has also been adapted into comics. Bogusław Polch and Maciej Parowski created a series consisting of six volumes of adventures featuring Geralt of Rivia. These were based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s stories, including one that was never published (“Betrayal”). Additionally, recently, following the popularity of the video games and TV series, an American comic adaptation of “The Witcher” has been created.

“Funky Koval”
The final entry in our selection is a true classic of Polish comics. Created by Maciej Parowski and Jacek Rodk, it tells the story of the tittle employee of an international detective agency dealing with uncovering conspiracies and exposing interplanetary scandals. It’s definitely worth taking some time to explore the “Funky Koval” series.
For Beginners
Finally, for those just starting their journey with the Polish language, we recommend titles such as “Koziołek Matołek,” “Kleks,” or even “Jeż Jerzy” (the latter is for adults only).
Happy reading!
